Owner-winemaker Jill Noble has turned out a couple of attractive '09's. Sourced from Bacchus Block No. 4, this Merlot displays a brilliant ruby color and attractive aromas of cherry, plum, cassis, rosebuds and mulberry. The medium-bodied flavors are initially broad and generous, but then deepen, with sensations of macerated fruits, intermixed with chocolate, licorice and loamy earth. The back reveals notions of fruit confit, dried orange peel, and dried cherries and earthy, minerally terroir, followed by moderate acids and sweet-dry tannins. 18.5/20 points.
2009 Couvillion Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Sagemoor Vineyard ($30) -new
From the Dionysus Vineyard, one of the three original blocks at Sagemoor, this is a classically styled Cabernet. Deep ruby-colored, it offers a smoky nose of wild blackberries, huckleberries and currants with scents of crushed roses, cigar box, mulberry, sandalwood and incense. The chewy dark fruit flavors are intermixed with licorice, cocoa powder, roasted coffee beans and scorched earth, and continue on the back with notes of roasted berries, dried grape skins, orange peel and pain grille. The finish reveals a classic grainy texture, followed by slightly nutty sweet-dry tannins. 18.5/20 points.
Words from world renowned wine critic Stephen Tanzer...
"Jill Noble got the wine bug, took a course, apprenticed with some skilled Walla Walla winemakers, and opened her own winery 10 miles north of the city of Walla Walla in 2006. Based on the three wines [I've tasted], she is off to a fine start"
